Canadian Science Team
The SPIRE Science Team consists of the following:
- The Principal Investigator and the Co-Principal Investigator;
- The Co-Investigators, one from each consortium institute;
- Associate Scientists from the participating countries;
- Working group members from the participating countries
Associate Scientist individuals who participate actively in the SPIRE project do so either by contributing to the hardware design and development activities at Co-I institutes or by working on the definition of the Guaranteed Time programme. Associate Scientists have access to Guaranteed Time data. As opposed to the Co-I list which will remain essentially fixed, the list of Associate Scientists is fluid; there are currently about 200 Associate Scientists.
In return for Canada's contributions to the SPIRE project, Canada has been allocated five Associate Scientist positions. The following table shows the involvement of Canadian scientists in SPIRE's Specialist Astronomy Groups (SAG) which define SPIRE Guaranteed Time program:
SAG name | Canadian Associate Scientist | |
1 | High Redshift Galaxies | Mark Halpern, Douglas Scott |
2 | Galaxies in the local universe | Christine Wilson |
3 | Star formation in the galaxy | James Di Francesco, Peter Martin, Christine Wilson |
4 | The galactic ISM | Mark Halpern, Peter Martin, David Naylor |
5 | Solar System | David Naylor |
6 | Stellar and Circumstellar | James Di Francesco |
Drs. Gary Davis and Paul Feldman were formerly members of the Canadian Herschel/SPIRE Science Steering Committee and Associate Scientists for Herschel/SPIRE. Both retired from their positions in late 2003.
Individuals who have made significant technical contributions to SPIRE can be appointed members of working groups and, eventually, can become Associate Scientists. A Co-investigator has to sponsor individuals to become working group members. The following working group members were sponsored by the Canadian Co-investigator, David Naylor:
Name | Appointment Date | SAG |
Locke Spencer | March 2006 | 4 |
Trevor Fulton | October 2007 | 4 |
Chris Pearson | October 2007 | 1 |
Edward Polehampton | October 2007 | 4 |
