The SPIRE Consortium
The scientific programme for SPIRE will consist of two primary themes:
The SPIRE instrument is being designed and built by a consortium of 16 institutes in 7 countries. The lead personnel in the project are:
- Principal Investigator (PI): Matt Griffin, Cardiff University, Cardiff, Wales, UK
- Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI): Laurent Vigroux, Service d'Astrophysique, Saclay, FR
- Instrument Scientist: Bruce Swinyard, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxon, UK
- Project Manager (PM): Tanya Lim, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxon, UK
Consortium Institutes:
- Astronomy Technology Centre, Edinburgh, UK
- Caltech/JPL, Pasadena, USA
- Cardiff University, Cardiff, Wales, UK
- CEA, Grenoble, France
- Imperial College, London, UK
- Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale, Orsay, France
- Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, Tenerife, Spain
- Istituto di Fisica dello Spazio Interplanetario, Rome, Italy
- Laboratoire d'Astronomie Spatiale, Marseille, France
- Mullard Space Science Laboratory, Surrey, UK

- Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire, UK
- Service d'Astrophysique, Saclay, France
- Stockholm Observatory, Stockholm, Sweden
- University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, Canada
- University of Padua, Italy
One Co-Investigator (Co-I) has been appointed from each participating institute. This arrangement has been chosen in order to establish and maintain clear and simple lines of responsibility. The Co-Is are responsible for delivery of the assigned work packages, and for ensuring that the required resources and management are in place. The Co-Is are:
- Peter Ade, Cardiff University
- Philippe Andre, Service d'Astrophysique
- Jean-Paul Baluteau, Laboratoire d'Astronomie de Marseille
- Jamie Bock, Jet Propulsion Laboratory
- Pierre Cox, Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale
- Alberto Franceschini, Universita di Padova
- Walter Gear, University of Wales
- Emmanuel Lellouch, Observatoire de Paris
- Harvey Moseley, Goddard Space Flight Center
- David Naylor, University of Lethbridge
- Goran Olofsson, Stockholm Observatory
- Ismael Perez-Fournon, Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias
- Michael Rowan-Robinson, Imperial College
- Paolo Saraceno, Istituto di Fisica dello Spazio Interplanetario
- Bruce Swinyard, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
- Gillian Wright, Astronomy Technology Centre (ATC)
The SPIRE Steering Group, consists of the PI, the Co-PI, and one Co-I from each participating country. The Steering Group is responsible for monitoring the allocation of work packages between countries and for maintaining the list of Science Team members. The steering group membership is:
- Matt Griffin, PI
